The device (2) has a controlling unit (4) controlling a navigation system (6) and a system controller (8) of a motor vehicle. An input unit (16) comprises a touch-sensitive sensor field (162) operated by hand and/or finger of an operator. The input unit detects a set of simultaneous contacts and movements of the hand and/or the finger of the operator on the sensor field. The input unit outputs operating commands to the controlling unit during detection of segment-like over-coating and straight-line over-coating of a section of the sensor field with the hand and/or finger of the operator. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating functions of a motor vehicle.
