The appliance has an image recording unit (18) producing an image signal which represents an image of an operator. A detection device (22) evaluates the signal to identify a sound spoken by the operator, and outputs control commands to a control unit, such that the control unit controls a function unit accordingly. A lip movement-recording device processes the signal, and records a lip position and a lip movement of the operator. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a household appliance.
