The device (10) has a housing (12) connected to one of a robot arm and a robotic tool, where the housing includes a base and a central axis. A piston (20) is mounted within the housing and moveable in an axial direction. An actuator (40) is connected to the other of the robot arm and robotic tool, where the actuator contacts the piston and moves the piston in an axial direction in response to a crash condition. A linearly actuated switch (92) is placed within the housing and axially aligned such that a predetermined amount of axial movement of the piston in the housing actuates the switch. An independent claim is also included for an electrical sensor for a robotic crash protector device, comprising a switch carrier sleeve.
