The method involves updating an offset value when a comparison criteria between a steering wheel speed estimated from dynamic variables of a motor vehicle and a steering wheel speed calculated from a relative steering wheel angle is satisfied, where the variables are provided by an Electronic stability program system (1). The estimated steering wheel speed is determined from a yaw rate of a vehicle measured by a sensor and from a rotation speed of wheels of the vehicle measured by the sensor. The calculated steering wheel speed is determined from the measurements of a sensor (6).
