This generator comprises a casing (b) of elongated tubular shape, which contains two gas sources adapted to carry out simultaneously, the inflation of the bag, one consisting of a pyrotechnic charge (100), the other consisting of a gas under pressure (200) stored in a reservoir (2), the wall of this housing being traversed by at least one discharge orifice (8 a, 8b) for which the gases exiting the housing, which penetrate into the airbag to swell, it is noteworthy in that the cross-section of the gases to pass through this discharge orifice varies during the operation of the generator, this section is small in a first phase, allowing a flow of gas which is limited and controlled, which is greater then, allowing a high flow rate, the increase of this section of passage operative when the pressure of the gas reaches a predetermined pressure threshold.
