The method involves activating operation of an air treating device when shutters of a passenger compartment of a motor vehicle are closed. The operation of the air treating device is deactivated when one of the shutters of the passenger compartment is open. A potential presence of passenger is detected in the vehicle, where the detection is implemented by an ultrasonic or infra-red volumetric sensors, and/or pressure sensors on a seat of the vehicle. The operation of the air treating device is deactivated when the potential presence is not detected in the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a computer program comprising instructions for executing a method for controlling operation of an air treating device of an air-conditioning system of a motor vehicle.
