PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device capable of rapidly and precisely assessing the shearing fatigue characteristics of a high strength metal material for power transmission shaft.SOLUTION: There are used a torsion vibration converter 7, an amplitude magnifying horn 8, an oscillator 4, an amplifier 5 and a control/data collecting means 3. The shape and dimension of a test piece 1 is set to a shape and a dimension resonating to the vibration of the amplitude magnifying horn 8 caused by the driving of the torsion vibration converter 7. The torsion vibration converter 7 is driven by a frequency (e.g., 20,000±500 Hz) of an ultrasonic region to perform a test for resonating the test piece 1 to subject the same to shearing fatigue breakage. The shearing fatigue characteristics of the metal material are assessed using the relation between the shearing stress amplitude and load frequency obtained by the test.
