PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance detecting accuracy in a paper position in a paper position detecting device having a light emitting element and a plurality of light receiving elements, and detecting a paper position as paper exists in a part opposed to the light receiving elements of setting light receiving output to a predetermined threshold value or less when emitting the light by the light emitting element, in the paper position detecting device detecting the paper position in the orthogonal direction to the paper carrying direction.;SOLUTION: This paper position detecting device uses the light emitting element 17 capable of adjusting a light emitting quantity, and is provided with a detecting condition setting means adjusting the light emitting quantity of the light emitting element 17 in response to a kind of paper so that the paper position can be detected by the same threshold value even to any kind of paper P, and detects the paper position by the light of its adjusted light emitting quantity by adjusting the light emitting quantity of the light emitting element 17 by the detecting condition setting means before detecting the paper position.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
