The present invention describes new thyroid compounds of the formula (I), wherein R, R, R, R and Z are defined in the description, a preparation method, a composition containing such compounds, and the use of such compounds and compositions as a medicament. In addition, the compounds of formula (I) have a significantly lower affinity for binding to thyroid receptors and, therefore, are largely devoid of thyrotoxic effects. The invention also relates to the use of a compound of formula (I) for the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment of various diseases such as obesity, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome and associated pathologies associated with metabolic syndrome.
