The invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition comprising the compound N-phenyl-N'-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)thiourea and to the use of the compound N-phenyl-N'-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)thiourea and said pharmaceutical composition in the production of medicaments for the treatment of illnesses involving hyperammonemia, such as, but not limited to, hepatic encephalopathy in general or hepatic encephalopathy caused by cirrhosis in particular. Said compound can partially inhibit the enzymatic activity of intestinal phosphate-activated glutaminase (PAG), causing a reduction in the production of ammonium.
