Disclosed are a method for converting a color image to a gray-scale image which can maintain characteristics of an original color image and can convert the original color image to a black and white image and a recording medium in which a program for performing the same is recorded. When the original color image is inputted, an object gradient including the characteristics of the inputted original color image is obtained. Determined is an entire domain mapping function for converting the original color image to the gray-scale image on the basis of the obtained object gradient. The original color image is converted to the gray-scale image using the determined entire domain mapping function. Accordingly, the present invention can rapidly convert the color image to the gray-scale image and can obtain a high-quality gay-scale image on which characteristics for a color difference included in the original color image are reflected.
