PURPOSE: A composition containing Opuntia ficus-indica root extract or a fraction thereof is provided to prevent and/or treat diabetes and/or diabetes complication without toxicity and side effects. CONSTITUTION: A composition for preventing or treating diabetes or diabetes complication contains: Opuntia ficus-indica root extract obtained using water, straight or branched alcohol of C1-C4; and a fraction thereof obtained by fractioning the extract using water, alkane of C5-C7, straight or branched alcohol of C1-C4, methylene chloride, or ethylene acetate. A composition for preventing or treating diabetes or diabetes related complications contains the Opuntia ficus-indica root alcohol extract, hexane fraction, methylene chloride fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, alcohol fraction, or water fraction as an active ingredient.
