The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating neurodegenerative diseases, and more particularly, to a pharmaceutical composition and functional health food for preventing and treating neurodegenerative diseases, which contain essential oil extracts obtained from needleleaf trees, such as Chamaecyparis obtuse as active ingredients. When administered, the pharmaceutical composition of the present invention exhibits effects of improving cognition ability, preventing neurodegenerative diseases, and improving and treating symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases. Particularly, the pharmaceutical composition of the present invention improves cognition ability and motor coordination for neurodegenerative diseases caused by beta-amyloid, and therefore, may be valuably used for preventing and treating neurodegenerative diseases and may improve learning ability and memory of people without neurodegenerative diseases.
