A handover (HO) method in a multi-mode wireless transmit / receive unit (WTRU) from a source system being a first network type to a target system being a second network type, wherein the WTRU includes a first transceiver for operating in the first network type and a second transceiver for operation in a second type of network, the method comprising the steps at which:! transmitting an HO message from a radio resource control (RRC) module of the first transceiver included in the first transceiver to a mobility management (MM) module of the second transceiver included in the second transceiver; ! sending a cross-communication message including an HO acknowledgment from the MM module of the second transceiver to the RRC module of the first transceiver, wherein the HO acknowledgment is transmitted to the home system by the first transceiver; and! pre-register the second transceiver via the first transceiver in the target system prior to handover, wherein the RRC module of the first transceiver transmits over the cross-link the registration information from the target system to the MM module of the second transceiver, establishing a direct HO tunnel between the second the transceiver device and the target system. ! 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of receiving at the first transceiver device a message from the source system to initiate registration of the target system, wherein the message is sent to the second MM module.
