The method involves arranging a transparent multi-touchscreen over a display of an operating device (4). An operating area is assigned to function of a motor vehicle (1). Another operating area is assigned to another function of the motor vehicle, where the operating areas are represented by the display. A touching process of a multi-touchscreen is assigned to a working hand, which is not utilized by another touching process when the latter process does not take place and the former process takes place in an area of the former operating area, where touching processes take place simultaneously. An independent claim is also included for an operating device for operating a motor vehicle.
