The device has a low pressure charging unit (14) utilized as an exhaust turbo-supercharger, and a high pressure charging unit (24) and an intercooler (20). The high pressure charging unit is implemented as an electrically propelled compressor, and a compressed air reservoir (26) is influenced by the compressor. The compressor is propelled by an electric drive (42) independently of loading and number of revolutions of an internal combustion engine (52). A pressure reducing valve is arranged between another compressed air reservoir (36) and combustion chambers (54) of the engine. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling load pressure in a charging device of an internal combustion engine.
