The method involves heating an exhaust gas probe (14) at a set-point temperature when the probe is ready to operate. An operating state of an internal combustion engine (10) is determined using a determination unit (58). Pumping signals (SP, UP, IP) are cut from time to time if a measure signal (UN) of the exhaust gas probe is not necessary based on operating state of the internal combustion engine while operating the engine. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for managing heated exhaust gas probe installed in an exhaust gas zone of an internal combustion engine, comprising a control apparatus (2) a computer program comprising instructions for executing a method for managing heated exhaust gas probe installed in an exhaust gas zone of an internal combustion engine (3) a computer program product comprising a recorded program code for executing method for managing heated exhaust gas probe installed in an exhaust gas zone of an internal combustion engine.
