The method involves determining and differentiating regulating moment (RM) exerted on a steering element by a driver assistance system in a block (5). A regulating moment speed (RMV) is resulted from the amount of the differentiated moment. A steering moment changing limit (LMG) is derived from the regulating moment speed. A steering moment speed (LMV) is compared with the changing limit for determining a value of one of two Boolean variables (B1). A derivation is made to find whether a driver moves a steering wheel or not from a logic function (11) of Boolean variables (B1, B2). An independent claim is also included for a device for implementing a method for detecting steering wheel activity of a driver in a motor vehicle.
