The method involves detecting running time by comparing a transmission time point with reception time reference of receiving pulses (10, 12). Transmission pulses are transmitted with changed carrier frequency based on transmission frequency changing characteristics. The time is detected by detecting frequency change of torque characteristics of the receiving pulses as reception frequency changing characteristics and by deriving reception time reference from the reception characteristics, and by providing the time as time offset resulted by comparison of the time reference with the time point. An independent claim is also included for a device for measuring running time of ultrasound pulses in a spatial area.
