The method involves successively moving an object (6) to sensor axles with an object speed. Individual signal characteristics that are determined with the individual sensor axles are added to total signal characteristics in a time-delay manner. Time-offsets of the individual signal characteristics of the sensor axles are adapted to running time of the object between the sensor axles. An object detection signal is generated from the total signal characteristics, where the detection signal is a binary switch signal that is obtained by threshold evaluation of the total signal characteristics.
