An extruder screw is disclosed which enables the mixing of viscous materials such as rubber compounds and thermoplastic materials. The auger contains a core that extends from a sealing end to a nose cone end. At least one screw flight runs radially from the core in a quasi-spiral pattern, with adjacent screw flights forming channels therebetween. Several elongated lugs extend radially from the core and are arranged in the channels. Both the shape and the number of approaches are variable to meet the requirements for thorough and swirling distraction and mixing of the material flow.
