A honeycomb structure which combines rigidity with toughness and thereby has improved thermal shock resistance. The honeycomb structure is a columnar honeycomb structure which comprises inorganic fibers and an inorganic substance and has cells separated by cell walls and arranged parallel in the lengthwise direction. It is characterized in that the inorganic substance forms bonding parts where the inorganic fibers are tenaciously bonded to one another and the bonding parts partly have a crack.
