The device has two refrigeration units comprising respective exchangers with brazed aluminum plates, to reduce the temperature of a gas flow to a temperature less than 0 degree Celsius and less than - 30 degree Celsius respectively. One of the refrigeration units is located downstream of the other refrigeration unit. The other refrigeration unit condenses impurities chosen from heavy hydrocarbons, oxygenated organic compounds or heavy metals such as mercury or mercury salts. The exchanger in the other refrigeration unit is made of carbon or stainless steel. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for cooling a gas flow (2) a method for purifying a gas flow.
