Shipping fresh or frozen foodstuffs requires the capability to keep the shipment cool to prevent spoilage. In the old days, blocks of ice were oftentimes relied on to provide the refrigerant. These days, diesel-powered transport refrigeration units (TRUs) on tractor trailers typically fill that role. But tightening emissions rules and a desire to reduce reliance on nondomestic fossil fuels are driving researchers and companies to seek new ways to keep things cool.
