PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for automatically generating an optimal two-dimensional medical image from a three-dimensional medical image.SOLUTION: In a method and an apparatus for automatically generating an optimal two-dimensional medical image from a three-dimensional medical image, at least one virtual plane crossing a three-dimensional volume is generated from three-dimensional volume image data for showing a part of a patient's body in a three-dimensional manner, at least one two-dimensional image representing a cross section of the part of the patient's body is generated by using the virtual plane, and a two-dimensional image optimal for diagnosis of the patient is outputted from among the at least one two-dimensional image.
