PRODUCTION OF SQUALENE FROM HYPER-PRODUCING YEAST

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing squalene from yeasts that hyper-produce squalene.SOLUTION: A method for preparing purified yeast is disclosed, where a squalene source is a yeast that hyper-produces squalene. The squalene is useful for pharmaceutical purposes. For instance, the squalene can be used to prepare an oil-in-water emulsion, and the emulsion is particularly suitable for use as an immunological adjuvant. The invention provides a process for preparing pure squalene, comprising the steps of: (a) growing a yeast that produces a high yield of squalene during culture; and (b) purifying squalene from the yeast grown in step (a).
