PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a generation element or the like which is capable of efficiently generating a terahertz wave with a relatively high intensity or a terahertz wave with a relatively narrow pulse width by optical excitation.;SOLUTION: A terahertz wave generation element includes: an optical waveguide including a core part 4 made of electro-optic crystal; an optical coupling member 7 which takes out a terahertz wave generated from the optical waveguide due to light propagation in the optical waveguide, into a space; and a reflecting layer 6 or a reflecting surface which reflects the terahertz wave. The reflecting layer 6 or the reflecting surface is provided in a position on the side opposite to the optical coupling member 7 with the core part 4 therebetween. The reflecting surface is provided in a position spaced from the core part 4 by such a distance that an amplitude of light propagated in the optical waveguide is sufficiently reduced. An incidence angle of the terahertz wave on an emission surface of the optical coupling member 7 may be set so as to meet the Brewster condition. By the same configuration and the opposite process, the terahertz wave generation element is used as a terahertz wave detection element for detecting a terahertz wave.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT
