The present invention is directed to a method of preparing a diester from a dinitrile compounds or imide. More specifically, by utilizing the vapor phase hydrolysis of a dinitrile compound in the presence of an alcohol to obtain a diester compound, the invention is directed to a method of preparing a diester compound of dinitrile compound. Still more particularly, the invention relates to a method of preparing a diester from a branch dinitrile compounds such as branched dinitrile compound obtained as a secondary product in the preparation of adiponitrile by the hydrocyanation of butadiene or methylglutaronitrile.
