PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrolyte for a solid polymer fuel cell capable of maintaining performance of an electrolyte membrane for a long period of time. PSOLUTION: The electrolyte for a solid polymer fuel cell includes a compound having a standard oxidation reduction potential in a range from 0.68[V] to 1.00[V]. The compound is shown in general formula (I). In the formula, X represents an oxygen atom or a hydroxyl group. Y1 and Y2 are the same or different, and are a kind of substituent selected from a group consisting of an alkyl group, an aryl group, an alkoxy group and substituents including a hydrogen atom, respectively.
