Sulfonic acid group containing aromatic polymers have been investigated as candidates forproton exchange membranes for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). As novel aromatichydrocarbon polymer solid electrolyte, the side chain type sulfonated polymer membraneswere developed. The sulfonated polymers were synthesized from modified engineeringplastic by sulfo-alkylation reaction. This polymer electrolyte membrane shows high protonconductivity above 0.065 S/cm at 80 °C and 95 % relative humidity. Membrane electrodeassemblies (MEA's) were prepared by hot press and the performance of MEA's wereevaluated in the single fuel cell. As a result, it has been determined that the output voltage is 730 mV/cm2 at 250 mA/cm2 and 70 °C.
