PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator for an alkaline zinc storage battery capable of sustaining short resistance over a long term; and to improve a charge-discharge cycle life of an alkaline zinc storage battery using it. PSOLUTION: A polyvinyl alcohol film having a structure where polymer main chains of polyvinyl alcohol are directly cross-linked to each other is provided by a first process of oxidizing a part of the polyvinyl alcohol film, and a second process of irradiating the polyvinyl alcohol film having the part oxidized with a radiation; and this alkaline zinc storage battery is provided by arranging the polyvinyl alcohol film to face a negative electrode side.
