1. Filter papers have been successfully coated with AEPE to examine the surface ion conduction transport 2. Process required much lower loadings than initially anticipated. 3. Preliminary data appears to validate both the method of applying coating, a method to prepare separators with ionic exchange media coatings for use with convection batteries, and hypothesized improvements in performance. 4. Approach should be applicable to a range of materials and may provide effective screening tool in evaluating different materials for use as separators. 5. These types of separators create new and improved opportunities for separator development since mechanical properties (filter) of separator can be decoupled from ionic properties (coating).
