PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new inexpensive production method for high purity silicon suitably used as the raw material for a solar battery, and to provide high purity silicon obtainable by the production method.;SOLUTION: In the method for producing polycrystalline silicon by reacting gaseous chlorosilane expressed by formula (1); SiHnCl4-n (1) (wherein, n denotes the integer of 0 to 3) with a metal capable of reducing the same and having a melting point lower than that of silicon, a temperature difference is made in a melt of the metal, so as to provide a high temperature part and a low temperature part, the chlorosilane is introduced into the high temperature part, so as to progress reduction reaction, the silicon formed by the reduction is diffused from the high temperature part to the low temperature part, and the polycrystalline silicon is precipitated at the low temperature part.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
