Disclosed is a method of producing a recombinant protein comprising: (a) transforming an E. coli host cell lacking a gene encoding pyrC or a homologue thereof having at least 70% identity to pyrC, with a vector comprising a gene encoding the recombinant protein and a gene encoding E. coli pyrC; and (b) growing said E. coli host cell under conditions of pyrimidine limitation, provided that said host cell is not within a human.
