A device (10) is disclosed for picking up and transporting a load. The device includes a pair of chassis sides (12, 14) including wheels and a protrusion for engaging with the load. The device further includes a link mechanism for expanding and contracting the device by moving the chassis sides (12, 14) towards and away from each other. The link mechanism is located above the load and enables the device to be positioned on either side of the load in an expanded state and to be subsequently contracted to engage with the load. The link mechanism is a cruciform linkage with two link members (36, 38) of substantially equal length which are pivoted to each other at their respective centres (58) to link the chassis sides (12, 14) together.
