Method for the production of C9 alcohols, in which a) a C4 hydrocarbon stream containing butene and butane is provided; b) the C4 hydrocarbon stream is subjected to oligomerization in an olefin oligomerization catalyst and the reaction mixture obtained is separated, in which case a stream containing octenes and a C4 hydrocarbon stream depleted in butene are obtained ; c) the C4 hydrocarbon stream depleted in butene is subjected to steam reforming or partial oxidation, in which case carbon monoxide and hydrogen are obtained; d) the stream containing octenes is hydroformylated in the presence of a hydroformylation catalyst with carbon monoxide and hydrogen to produce C9 aldehydes, in which case the carbon monoxide used and the hydrogen used come in more than 80% of step c) ; and e) the C9 aldehydes are catalytically hydrogenated with hydrogen, in which case the hydrogen used in step e) comes from more than 80% of step c).
