A system for treating wastewater using electrocoagulation in which fouling oftheelectrodes is greatly reduced or eliminated. The system comprises an anodecomprising an anodesurface, with an anode surface area, and a cathode comprising a cathodesurface, with a cathodesurface area greater than or equal to the anode surface area. A power supplyis connected to theanode and the cathode and provides direct current at a current density ofbetween 0.2 and 3.0A/cm2 of the anode surface area. The wastewater provides electricalconductivity between theanode surface and the cathode surface.
