The unit has a drive wheel (18) supported on a spindle (16) and driven by an output unit (40). The drive wheel is rotatably supported in a support pipe (14) using a bearing bracket (28) and has a retainer (52) for a fastening device (54) for deflecting the crash-forces. A ring-shaped support unit (62) is fastened between an axial end of the support pipe and the retainer for mechanical bracing of the support pipe. The support unit is formed as an outer ring that rests against outer circumferential surface of the support pipe. An independent claim is also included for a method of manufacturing a gear-drive unit.
