Disclosed is a knife (32) that can be used as a shredding tool for a shredding roll or as a stationary knife for a shredding machine. Grooves (100) are provided within lateral surfaces (86, 88, 90, 92) connecting the main surfaces (82, 84) of said knife, said grooves (100) forming recessed sections (102) of a cutting edge (94) at the cutting points with the main surfaces (82, 84). Said sections (102) of the cutting edge increase the shredding effectiveness of a shredding machine which uses such a knife as a knife member of a shredding roll or as a stationary knife cooperating with the shredding roll.
