PURPOSE: A composition containing compounds isolated from Inula japonica extract for preventing or treating allergic diseases is provided to suppress prostaglandin and leukotriene generation. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating inflammatory or allergic diseases contains tomantosin, britanin, or quercetagetin 3,4'-dimethyl ether as an active ingredient, isolated from Inula japonica extract. The Inula japonica extract is a polar solvent soluble extract or non-polar solvent soluble extract. The polar solvent soluble extract is prepared using water, methanol, ethanol, butanol, or mixture solvent thereof. The non-polar solvent soluble extract compound is prepared by isolating with hexane, chloroform, methylene chloride, or ethyl acetate. A health food for preventing and treating inflammatory and allergic diseases contains tomantosin, britanin, or quercetagetin 3,4'-dimethyl ether as an active ingredient. The health food is powder, granule, tablet, capsule, or beverage.
