A soap-free, self-foaming gel comprises aqueous phase(s), N-acylsarcosine(s) (less than 4 wt.%) where the acyl radical is a 10-20C, mineral and/or organic base for dissolving N-acylsarcosine and producing a pH of 4-8, amphoteric or zwitterionic surfactant(s), non-ionic surfactant(s), and self-foaming agent(s). Independent claims are included for: (1) a method of shaving method comprising applying a self- foaming gel to the surface of the skin to be shaved, and then shaving the hairs using a razor; and (2) a method of cleansing the skin comprising applying a self-foaming gel to the surface, and then rinsing with water.
