A method for operating a digital image processing device having a composition guide function is provided to store an image file for composition guide separately, overlap the image file with a preview image, display the preview image, adjust the composition of the preview image so as to be similar to that of a composition guide image, and photograph the preview image, thereby photographing an image while imitating the composition of a good photographing image. A method for operating a digital image processing device with a composition guide function comprises the following steps of: displaying a preview image according to an image photographing mode(501); reading a favorite menu for composition setting(502); determining whether to display an image file for composition guide stored in a favorite folder in a thumbnail mode(503); displaying the image file in the thumbnail mode in the right lower end of the preview image displayed on a display unit(504); selecting a desired image file for composition guide using directional keys(505); displaying the selected image file for composition guide translucently on the preview image(508); and adjusting the composition of the preview image so that the composition of the preview imaged can be similar to that of a composition guide image and photographing the preview imaged(509).
