The machine i.e. automatic winder (1), has a unit for determining a parameter for defined control of a drive, where the parameter is based on a format of an empty core. The unit contains an operating element (38A), which manually controls the drive. A handling device e.g. frame opener, frame lifter, tube feeder and thread catcher, is manually displaced based on the empty core. A manually moved path of the handling device is stored in a storage device (38B) and retrieved for automatic insertion of the empty core by a migratory device (23). The drive is attached to a control device (38).
