The method involves detecting a free-formed object (1) in a detection device. Individual points (5) of a center line (7) are determined within a test area (4) around the object at a test position. The individual points are computed as center points of a line segment between lateral end points of the object. The detection process is closely continued in a scanning direction within the test area, where length of the center line represents length of the object. The scanning direction and a detection direction are formed as determination parameters.
