Treating poppy seeds, preferably opium poppy seeds comprises washing the poppy seeds with water for reducing alkaloid content and drying, where the water exhibits temperature of = 75[deg] C and/or is excited by ultrasound. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a device (8), where the poppy seeds are washed in a water bath; and (2) treating poppy seeds, preferably opium poppy seeds, comprising washing the poppy seeds with a liquid to reduce alkaloid content and drying in a gaseous drying medium at = 100[deg] C, preferably = 150[deg] C.
