The unit (101) has a detection module e.g. barcode reader (106), keyboard and camera, which detects a transmission identifier of an object. A processing module (105) combines the detected transmission identifier with a device identifier stored in the unit. A transmission module (104) e.g. global system for mobile communicationsmodule, radio-frequency identification module and universal mobile telecommunications systemmodule, transmits the combination of the device identifier and the transmission identifier to a central management system. An independent claim is also included for a method for monitoring an object using a monitoring unit.
