The device has a photovoltaic device (12) e.g. photovoltaic foil, attached at an outer surface of a locomotive unit, where electrical energy is obtained via the photovoltaic foil for operating the locomotive unit. A battery (24) is provided for storing the electrical energy, and the photovoltaic foil is made of elastic- and/or multi-layer- and/or organic material. An insulating layer i.e. insulating foil, is provided between the photovoltaic device and an outer surface of the locomotive unit. An aluminum foil is provided around the locomotive unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for converting solar or sun energy into an electrical energy for a locomotive unit.
