A memory device (101) has rechargeable memory cell (103) which is charged by using electric current. A monitoring device (105) monitors a physical parameter of the memory cell. The monitoring device is comprised of controllable grounding electrode (107) for diverting the charging current of memory cell based on mass of the monitored physical quantity. The grounding electrode is comprised of shift element (209) for providing electrical short circuit between memory cell and charging circuit. An independent claim is included for method for operating memory device.
