One method of estimating a tire-road friction coefficient includes determining when a slope of a characteristic curve of the tire that relates a used longitudinal friction of a tire to a longitudinal slip of the tire is linear and non-linear. If the slope of the characteristic curve of the tire is linear, then the tire-road friction coefficient is estimated by correlating the slope of the characteristic curve of the tire with the tire-road friction coefficient. If the slope of the characteristic of the tire is non-linear, which indicates that the tire is close to or at saturation, then the tire-road friction coefficient is estimated by calculating a current used longitudinal friction of the tire.
