The method involves estimating frictional coefficient between road and a tire of a motor vehicle within a linear range of the tire using a single track model, and measuring characteristic speed of a vehicle from a wheel angle and a greed rate. The characteristic speed is derived from a transfer factor of a transfer function of the wheel angle to the greed rate. The frictional coefficient is estimated based on the nominal characteristic speed. An independent claim is also included for a control device for a motor vehicle.
